Distance Between Umpire and Baserunner

This applet allows a user to percieve the straight line distance between the umpire in a baseball game and a base runner as they travel around the bases.  The umpire is represented by the hollow point below home plate.  Press play in the lower left corner to start the animation.  The hollow point (umpire) can be freely moved throughout the applet to simulate the distance between the baserunner and other players on the field such as the pitcher or short stop.  The line segment on the left shows the distance in a purely vertical way so it is easier to perceive the change in speed of the increase and decrease in distance.  This applet is adapted from one made by John Golden.  His original can be found here.
